VE Day at Nestlings Nursery

As we arrive on VE Day, you may notice events, tributes, and celebrations taking place in communities and schools across the UK. Victory in Europe Day is an important moment in British history, marking the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945. While many older children and adults may take part in commemorations, at Nestlings Nurseries, we’ve chosen not to celebrate VE Day with our little ones — and we’d like to share why.

Understanding the World: Age Matters

At Nestlings, we’re deeply committed to making sure every experience we offer is developmentally appropriate. VE Day commemorates the end of a devastating war — a time marked by loss, destruction, and immense human suffering. These are big, emotionally complex ideas that are difficult for very young children to fully understand or process. At this stage in their development, children learn best through joyful, secure, and nurturing experiences — not through historical re-enactments or concepts of war.

Being Mindful of Trauma and Family Experience

We’re also mindful that not every child’s experience is the same. Some children in our care may have family connections to ongoing conflicts, military service, or refugee journeys. Even indirect exposure to discussions of war and violence can be confusing or upsetting. As a trauma-informed setting, we aim to create a calm and inclusive environment where all children feel safe and respected — regardless of their background.

Celebrating Values That Unite Us

Rather than focusing on war or victory, we prefer to highlight the values that bring communities together: kindness, peace, resilience, and cooperation. These are the qualities that truly help us build a better world — and they’re much easier for young children to engage with and understand. If only the things blown around the world were bubbles, instead of bombs, guns and grenades! Before we're 5, do we even need to know these things exist? Another debate for another time, maybe.

You may still choose to commemorate VE Day in your own way at home, and we respect the importance this day may hold for your family. However, at Nestlings Nurseries, we’ll continue to support children through meaningful play, positive relationships, and conversations about how we care for one another — today and every day - and blow lots of bubbles!

Thank you for supporting our approach and for being part of the Nestlings community.
