Why Scandinavian-Style Education Inspires Everything We Do at Nestlings Nursery

As the owner of Nestlings Nurseries in Cardiff, I’ve spent years exploring what truly matters in early childhood education. For me, it always comes back to one thing: giving children the freedom, trust, and time to grow into themselves.

That’s why our philosophy at Nestlings is deeply inspired by the Scandinavian approach to early years education—an approach rooted in play, nature, connection, and the belief that childhood is something to be honoured, not rushed.

Here in Wales, we blend that beautiful Nordic ethos with our own Welsh culture and values to create a warm, nurturing space where children can thrive. Let me share a little more about why we believe this way of learning is so powerful—and how we bring it to life every day at Nestlings.

1. Childhood Comes First

In Scandinavian countries like Finland and Sweden, there’s a refreshing emphasis on protecting childhood. There’s no rush into formal academics, no pressure to perform or meet arbitrary milestones. Instead, early years are about exploring, playing, and building emotional security.

At Nestlings, we’ve taken that to heart. Our children aren’t pushed into early reading or worksheets. Instead, we follow their lead, offering open-ended experiences that spark curiosity and imagination. We know that when a child feels safe and happy, the learning will come naturally.

2. Play Is Serious Learning

In Scandinavia, “learning through play” isn’t a slogan—it’s a science-backed approach. Play is how children understand the world, negotiate relationships, and test ideas. And that’s exactly how we design our days at Nestlings.

From carefully curated loose parts to child-led roleplay corners, our environment is built to encourage exploration. Whether a child is making a potion out of leaves or building a den with friends, they’re developing communication skills, resilience, and creativity.

3. Rain or Shine, We’re Outdoors

One of the most magical aspects of the Scandinavian model is the deep connection to nature. Forest schools, daily outdoor play, and a belief that "there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing" are central to their philosophy.

We’ve embraced this fully at Nestlings. In both our settings, we make sure outdoor time is a daily ritual—not just when the sun is shining. Our children splash in puddles, dig in the mud kitchen, and go on mini-adventures to nearby green spaces. Being outside calms the nervous system, promotes physical health, and gives children the freedom to move and breathe.

4. Relationships Come First

The Scandinavian approach also puts a huge emphasis on emotional well-being. Educators are seen as companions and guides, not instructors. Children are given space to express themselves and are supported in building healthy, respectful relationships.

At Nestlings, we work hard to create a family-like atmosphere. Our practitioners take time to build genuine, trusting bonds with every child. We model empathy, encourage open communication, and help children develop emotional literacy from the very start. We are, and want to be, the extended family.

5. Community and Culture

Even though our roots are in the Scandinavian ethos, we’re also proud of our place here in Wales. We weave in local traditions, Welsh language, and community connections so our children grow up feeling a sense of belonging. We’ve found that the calm, nature-inspired Scandinavian mindset blends beautifully with the warmth and rhythm of Welsh life.

Whether it’s making Welsh cakes together, celebrating Dydd Gwyl Santes Dewi, or listening to bilingual story time under the trees, we’re showing children that they’re part of something bigger—both locally and globally.

6. A Slower, Kinder Way

Perhaps what I love most about the Scandinavian style is the gentleness of it all. There’s no rush. No harsh discipline. Just trust in the process of growing up.

At Nestlings, that belief shapes everything we do. We create unhurried spaces where children can be who they are. We celebrate small joys—like the first time a child climbs a tree or tells a story all on their own. And we involve parents as partners, sharing in the wonder of those early years together.

Final Thoughts

The world can feel fast, loud, and full of pressure. But at Nestlings Nurseries, inspired by the Scandinavian way, we offer something different: a slower pace, a deeper connection, and a space where childhood is truly treasured.

We believe this is the best foundation we can give our children—not just for school, but for life.
