Nurturing Every Child: How We Support All Learning Styles at Nestlings Nursery

learning through play at Nestlings Nursery
Some of the things our little chicks get up to at Nestlings

At Nestlings Nurseries, we believe that every child is unique—and so is the way they learn. From the moment a child joins us, we’re not just observing what they do, but how they do it. Some children are always moving, some love to talk things through, others prefer to watch, explore, or build. All of these are valid, natural ways to learn—and they all have a place in our nurseries.

Why We Don’t Follow Traditional British Schooling Methods -

Traditional schooling in the UK has historically followed a very structured, one-size-fits-all model—often focused on sitting still, listening, and completing tasks in a set way and time. While this may work for some children (typically verbal or auditory learners), it doesn’t support the full range of learning styles or the natural pace of early childhood development.

At Nestlings Nurseries, we take a different path. We intentionally move away from rigid, school-like routines because we know they don’t reflect how most young children learn best. Expecting all children to sit still, listen quietly, and complete worksheets simply doesn’t honour the individuality, curiosity, and creativity that thrives in the early years.

Instead, we offer a child-led, play-based approach that allows each child to flourish in their own way, whether that’s through movement, music, art, exploration, social play, or quiet reflection.

Understanding Learning Styles -

Research over the years has explored the idea that children learn best in different ways. While no single model is perfect, many educational frameworks recognise key learning preferences that can help us better understand and support each child. These often include:

  • Visual learners – who prefer images, colours, and spatial understanding

  • Auditory learners – who learn through listening and sound

  • Kinaesthetic learners – who learn by doing, touching, and moving

  • Verbal learners – who thrive with storytelling, speaking, and reading

  • Logical/mathematical learners – who enjoy problem-solving and patterns

  • Social learners – who learn through interaction with others

  • Solitary learners – who prefer quiet, independent reflection

While modern research suggests that children benefit from a mix of experiences rather than being "just one type," recognising these preferences helps us create a rich, inclusive learning environment.

How We Embrace All Styles Through Play -

At Nestlings, we don’t box children into categories—we simply observe, listen, and respond. Our child-led, open-ended approach to play allows us to naturally meet children where they are and offer experiences that speak to all kinds of learners. Here’s how:

For Kinesthetic Learners

Our indoor and outdoor spaces are designed for movement, exploration, and hands-on learning. From messy play to climbing, digging, building, and role-playing—children are constantly learning through action.

For Visual Learners

We provide a visually rich environment full of colours (soft, specifically chosen calming colours which aren't overstimulating), textures, and creative materials. Activities like painting, drawing, loose parts play, and storytelling with props allow children to see and create meaning in their own way.

For Auditory Learners

We include music, singing, stories, and conversation in our daily rhythm. Whether it's a group song or a quiet chat with a key worker, there's space for children who tune into the world through sound.

For Logical Learners

We offer puzzles, sorting games, construction materials, and open-ended provocations that invite problem-solving, experimentation, and curiosity.

For Social Learners

Our free-flowing spaces and small group work allow for collaboration, sharing, and co-play. Children learn so much from each other—and we encourage those connections.

For Solitary Learners

There are always calm corners, cosy nooks, and quiet invitations to play for those who prefer a gentler pace or time to themselves.

Following the Child's Lead -

The beauty of child-led play is that it respects the child's natural interests and ways of learning. Our skilled practitioners observe closely and gently scaffold each child’s development without interrupting their flow. Whether a child is talking non-stop or quietly lining up pebbles, they are learning—and we’re right there beside them, supporting their unique journey.

Every Style is Welcome -

At Nestlings, we’re proud to be a place where no learning style is better than another. We celebrate the richness of diversity in how children think, play, and grow. With open-ended resources, thoughtful spaces, and responsive adults, we ensure every child feels seen, heard, and supported.

Because learning isn’t one-size-fits-all—and it never should be.
